لعيب هو الجمال

It seems that this translation is accurate on the whole, but one letter probably got lost when copy and pasting the text. It should read:

العيب هو الجمال

This is pronounced: al-3aeeb huwa l-djamaal

Personally, I would have chosen a slightly different translation, namely:

النقص هو الجمال

This is pronounced: an-naqS huwa l-djamaal

Hi Arabic Genie … noticed your blog & was very impressed .. saw that you translated in arabic for people… not too good with computers so didnt know how to post but noticed an email address ..

There is a saying in arabic “Ya Jabil May Hazak Reeh” not sure exactly how its spelt but i know that is how its pronouced …

Are you able to translate to arabic font ?

It took me a while to figure out the saying from the transliteration provided, because I was confused by the word “May” (thinking that it referred to “water”). I then realized that the “y” forms part of the next word: “ya jabil ma yhazak reeh”. Making some guesses, I finally arrived at this:

يا جبل ما يهزك ريح

(yaa djabal maa yahuzzak reeH)

Literally, this translates as: “oh mountain, wind can’t/won’t shake you”. I hadn’t seen this proverb before, and only a few results come up on Google. Basically, I guess it means that one should be as strong as a mountain in the face of adversity.

Perhaps a native speaker can provide some examples of usage?

One thing to note is that the saying is colloquial, not formal Arabic. However, the negation ما (maa) is used in most dialects and understood everywhere.

There are quite a number of Arabic words that have the meaning of “compassion”, for example:
الرأفة (ar-ra’fa)
الشفقة (ash-shafaqa)
الحنان (al-Hanaan)

However, the most standard way of translating compassion is probably الرحمة (ar-raHma). Below is this word in three different fonts:

As a side note, this word shares the same root as two words in the opening line of the Koran (1st line of al-faatiHa):

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

The word الرَّحْمَـٰن (ar-raHmaan) is usually translated as “the beneficent”, sometimes as “the merciful”. In essence, however, it means “compassionate” too. This form is usually reserved as one of God’s 99 names in Islam.

The word الرَّحِيم (ar-raHeem) also means “compassionate”. Unlike رحمـان (raHmaan), رحيم (raHeem) is in common usage.

الزمن يداوي كل الجراح

Pronunciation: az-zaman yudaawi kull al-djiraaH

This translates literally as: “the-time cures/treats all the-wounds”.

Even though this is not an Arab proverb itself, the translation will be understood easily by any native speaker.

Translating “believe” into Arabic is tricky and I’m glad you gave a few example sentences to illustrate which sense of “believe” you mean. The word آمن (aamana) is a good fit for “to believe” in the religious sense (e.g. “I believe in God”), but it would seem out of place in a translation of e.g. “I believe things will get better”. This phrase would be better translated using the verb اعتقد (i3taqada). However, اعتقد (i3taqada) does not have the connotations of “determination” or “hope”, that the English verb “to believe” sometimes has.

I think that in your case the word اقتناع (iqtinaa3) would be better suited. الاقتناع (al-iqtinaa3) means “conviction” in the sense of being convinced of something. E.g. أنا مقتنع بأنني سألعب في كأس العالم ana muqtana3 bi-annani sa-al3abu fi ka’s al-3aalam “I am convinced that I will play in the World Cup”.

Alternatively, I would suggest العزيمة al-3azeema (determination) or الثقة بالنفس ath-thiqa bi-n-nafs (self-confidence or trust in one self) or perhaps القوة الداخلية al-quuwa ad-daakhileeya “inner strength”. Maybe “hope” الأمل al-amal might be an option too? There are tattoo designs for all of these four phrases in my Arabic Tattoos eBook.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t give you a clear-cut answer, but I hope that my explanations have given you a better idea of your options. If you send me the word your dad wrote for you I will tell you what it says.

There are a lot of people asking me how to say “family” in Arabic, both for tattoo design and for general information. Arabic is a very rich language with a rich vocabulary. So it should come as no surprise that there is more than one way to say “family” in Arabic.

Perhaps the most common word for family is عائلة (‘aa’ila). This can refer to both the close family and extended family. The word أسرة (usra) on the other hand is arguably used more frequently to just refer to the immediate family. Another word that is sometimes used to refer to (extended) family is أهل (ahl), which can also refer to a people, kindred, or relatives. The term آل (aal) is similar and it too means (extended) family, kindred or relations.

Apart from the sometimes subtle differences in meaning between عائلة (‘aa’ila) and أسرة (usra), the terms are used interchangeably. Nevertheless, there are differences in usage as regards regions. I would venture as far as saying that عائلة (‘aa’ila) is used more frequently than أسرة (usra) in the dialects of the Levantine region (Syria, Leabanon, Jordan, Palestine/Israel). However, both terms are understood everywhere in all dialects and are also used in written Arabic / Modern Standard Arabic.

My personal preference is to use عائلة (‘aa’ila) in most cases. So here is “family” in Arabic in picture format for all those of you who have trouble displaying Arabic letters on your PC:

I was wondering if you might be willing to translate the phrase “Nothing is true; everything is permissible.”

The saying has always fascinated me as it seems contradictory and at one turn seems to promote lawlessness but to my mind goes on to speak to responsibility and accounting for one’s own actions.

A fascinating phrase that seems to have been attributed to Hassan al-SabaaH, the founder of the Assassins. However, I could not find a reliable source that traced this saying back to this person. Apparently, Nietzsche first used this aphorism, followed by the novelist William Burroughs.

I’d translate it into Arabic as “لا شيء حقيقي وكل شيء مباح” (la shey’a haqeeqiyun wa kulu shey’in mubaaH).

I assume that this is a transcription of the Arabic حَلَمْنا فيك أمْس, which translates as “we dreamed of you yesterday”. Note the 7 as a way to transcribe the letter ح (Haa’). See my article on Arabic Chat.
